MEDIEVAL ITALIAN STEW (Pie in a Pipkin)

1 1/2 lbs of stewing steak cut into 1/2 inch cubes: 1 onion: 1/2 cup of raisons: 1/4 tbs each of cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg and mace: 1 tbs of white wine vinegar: Salt and pepper.

Brown the beef in a frying pan with some olive oil and saute the chopped onion. Place in the 'pipkin' along with a small quantity if water. Put in the oven and sinner for 1 1/2 to two hours.

When the beef is cooked, add the vinegar and cook for a further few minutes.

Serve with sauteed potatoes.
